Just for show

So now we start to learn the truth.

We've had all the headlines, the thrilling pictures of Typhoon aircraft tacking of on after burners, the first female Typhoon combat pilot.

No mention of the fact the only air to air kill has been a trainer aircraft that had just landed by the French.

We know the deployment has been expensive.

The RAF has reminded us how their cuts should be reversed.

But no one mentioned that all this tax payer cash burned has been wasted - until now ( see a list of the failings here ).

The whole exercise seems to have been more about internal UK politics than the job in hand.

OF course the RAF Tornado's have done a useful job, but only with the capacity they so embarrassingly lacked in the first gulf war when even more aged RAF Buccaneers had to be drafted in. ( So not only do we have the current disgrace - but its also an example of lessons not learned in the past from previous failures. )

Just what on earth is going on ? Some should be sacked as its tax payer's money that is being needlessly burned here and I for one would like to see heads roll.

Further: The Reg has an article showing how desperate the RAF was to carry out its show attack and that its target was probably a decommissioned tank anyway. The whole exersie carried out for purposes of UK politics.

And so it begins

The RAF are poised to announce savage cuts shortly, in an attempt to pre-empt other cuts to follow.

The cuts they are probably aiming for may well help kill the Fleet Air Arms fast jet capability (by wiping out the Harrier squadrons), and also are a tacit acceptance that the UK will be unable to undertake any large offensive operations in the near future and perhaps also unable to defend itself for any period of time ( the cut in airborne early warning aircraft show this).

Inside government, below the level of ministerial denial and lies to the public things are clearly very desperate indeed.

This is just the beginning. What follows will be painful and humiliating and it is all the fault of Gordon Brown and his arrogance and wilful destruction of one of the worlds most successful countries and economies.

Time to show Russia we will defend ourselves

I have said before that the Saxa Vord radar station should be brought out of mothballs (closed by the Labour government - thanks Gordon Brown).

The Russians are behaving like bullies right now and if you intend to stand up to a bully you need to signal it early on.

Lets be clear Tu160 "Blackjack" bombers patrolling in dash distance of Uk cities etc is not the act of a friendly country.

Tony Sharp made the same point about a week ago - at the time I felt that other concerns were more important, like the Falklands, but now I'm not so sure.

There is a definite ratcheting up of pressure from Putin. Maybe to create a crisis for his own purposes ( staying on as President for example ). But I don't see making prudent defensive moves as being provocative.
A TU160 B1B Lancer which I mistook - as did google images, but that's no excuse - nobody's Teddy Bear. A very serrious piece of kit to deliver Nuclear devastation with super sonic dash capability.

Update: Its seems I have a picture of a B1B Lancer - thanks to The Morning Star for pointing they out. They do look similar as you can see on Norishing obscurity blog here and also here.
