David Melding AM is right - federalism can save the Union

Just saw this article from a tweet from StGeorgeIsCross from Conservative assembly man David Melding, which reports on a book where he has suggested federalism for the UK, with England getting its political rights as a home nation.

This runs counter to Labour EU inspired balkanisation of England strategy and David Cameron's appeasement of Celtic nationalism strategy.

The reason is should work is that it creates symmetry, easily comprehended justice and equality of respect between the home nations.

The sooner it Conservative policy the better as far as I'm concerned.

Can you explain your meaning of federalism. As a staunch Nationalist, but also a royalist this could cause me a dilemma!!

Federalism mains the source of sovereignty with the federal government, but it is then devolved. In the case of the US they have a consitution that limits powers of the federal government - though the argument about the boundary between federal and state government has been a key issue of early US politics.

It would fall far short of the aims of the Celtic nationalists.

Confederalism is where sovereignty is pooled, but never lost by the constituent parts.

Its conceivable that Celtic nationalism might tolerate this as a way point on the road to total break up. ( The Scottish Constitutional Convention for example claims sovereignty for Scotland and is not compatible with a federal UK ).

Clearly the political Union could only continue for any length of time under federalism, although the monarchy can be shared by many states, as is already the case with many commonwealth states.

That would be a yes on the WLQ.

Everyone's happy as they want to be ( I sometimes suspect certain of the home nations never really want to be happy ).
