For 2009
I'm just about half way through reading Nassim Taleb's book "The Black Swan" at to show I have been paying some sort of attention I'm not going to make vast predictions for 2009.
However here's my resolution:
- I intend to pay far more attention the the Ratchet effect in our society where by society is changed small step by small step, without its consent, towards the artificial construct of the so called progressives and the socialists.
I'll be labelling such posts with the label The Ratchet.

Yep, Socialists tend to forget that societies spring back to the form that requires the least artificial topology, and they do it rather violently.
The left have been good at shifting blame away from themselves, but it's only a matter of time before a mob comes for them.
I've heard it's a thought-provoking book which goes a little bonkers in places - enjoy!
Yes, that's how it is done: step by plausible step, with all the excuses in the world for each one — apart from those that can't be pushed through. Those are the ones that come in via the back door, quietly and (they hope) unnoticed, or by indirection, e.g. effectively-compulsory ID Cards.
I shall quote this in future, to describe the effect.
I've heard this effect called the Ratchet else where, specifically by Daniel Hannan (though I can't find the reference ).
The motivation here is to try to identify the things that need to be changed to reverse the damage Labour and its co travellers have inflicted on our nation.
Of course the more wide spread the idea, the more likely that the roots of authoritarian socialism can be dug out.
You will have all noticed the English regions getting ratcheted over the last few years? One prime example.
