Password protection ? What type of encryption was used ?

The information is being spun into the media that the disks ( that contained most of the countries bank accounts ) were "password protected".

This phrase makes me suspicious.

Do they mean zipped with a password ? Or something a bit (no pun intended) more serrious.

Those chasing this story should ask for specifics ....

Update 22:58: And they have. Newsnight has just confirmed that the data on the two CD's was not encrypted. Its a staggering lapse.

An expert from Cambridge university has made the key point that its should not have been possible for such data to be burnt onto a CD at all !

I am shocked and dismayed -and frankly worried about fraud in the future carried out in my name, my wife's name and the name of my children.

Heads should roll ...

Oh great, so there is a password in between one individual and 25 million people's personal details.

Now I can sleep safe at night, knowing the government has done everything it can to protect us all.

Now that criminals get can your signature from the land registry, your address, bank account details and DOB they can start setting up credit accounts to spend your money.

Its a disaster - all created by arrogance and incompetence in the public sector.
