Gender apartheid

Just reading about the poor woman in Saudi Arabia who has been condemened to 200 lashes and a phrase jumped out at me by the American journalist Mona Eltahawy. "Gender apartheid".

Racial apartheid was considered unjustifiable, even when its was backed up by some off shots of Christianity in South Africa ( I would argue that the position was against Christian teaching - but that was part of the situation ).

Is "Gender apartheid" to be allowed because a recently revived ancient version of Islam demands it ?
