6 months ago this would have been the blogger headline of choice :-

Prescott stretches 'junket' into family holiday By Tom Leonard (In today's Telegraph ).

Instead we are treated to Postman Pats attempt to stir up the class war by getting parents who send their children to independent schools to pay 3 times for their education, instead of just twice as they do now.

By the way if I was a teacher in the state sector I'd be furious at the implication that independent teachers are better.

As someone who spent time in both systems - let me tell you that is far from being the clear case. In fact a number of the people teaching in the independent sector were not qualified as teachers.

I confess that I teach.
Two of my colleagues have recently left our state school, which isn't a bad one, and gone to a private school. They work longer hours for slightly less money and much less security, but they have classes of 18 and are able to teach.
If I weren't so close to retiring I'd consider it myself. I had a class of 24 in 1993 and it was wonderful. I knew every child and their family very well. I was able to move them forward and coping with the couple of idiots was a lot easier than in a group of 34. Also, we weren't target driven and if an interesting aside came up in a lesson you could explore it.

I look forward to seeing private school teachers earning their institutions 'charity' status in state schools. Should be an interesting experience for them. Wayne or Becki of the inner city won't take long to sort them.

Not sure what you mean here, Man in a Shed. They were not qualified or are not qualified?

James,

Clearly my English teachers failed in their assignment - it should have been were.

That's a very politician like answer: blame the teacher. Do not, on any account, think that the fault may be with yourself.
