Times out

Just heard the plans for the paywall around The Times web site.

Whilst I can understand the drive to run a profitable business and don't see why people can't be charged I would add this....

£1 per day is way way too expensive. You should be thinking of 10p per day tops, maybe much less based on a page view micro payment system. ( Even then I don't think I personally would pay ).

I think the current proposals will just destroy your advertising revenue as you lose eyeballs.

Further: Iain Dale's running a poll on this here.

They are also offering £2 per week, which will attract more people, but I still think that's way too high.

Not a chance.

With so many other sources of news (of varying quality admittedly) why would I spend my money on this one?

Something like Google News gives me an easy window on the world, allows me to compare stories from multiple sources and doesnt cost me anything. Couple that with the views of my chosen bloggers and I'm well covered.

What's not to like?

I only go there for the cartoons. Anything interesting gets posted elsewhere one way or another in any case.

Capitalists solution.

Buy the Times in the shop and the online is free.
Buy the online and the paper is free.
Buy all 5 daily papers and the Sat/Sun is free online.
Subscribe to the Times and all online is free too.

@BillQuangoMP - I have to agree that people should be paid for what they do, so I'm not against charging.

The question is how to do it.

I wonder if a bar code token on the paper ( each paper would need its own code ) which could be scanned with iPhones etc.

What won't stand is the purchase rates they are suggesting

I think it's appalling. For many people abroad these sites are a link with "home" - we can't all afford their subscription charges! They could surely control it by putting different sorts of news on their websites to that in their printed editions.
